And the Oscar goes to....
Mardi Gras: Wow! For the first time ever, all the faces, couples, grandparents, babies...all of them, had the smiles and expressions of kids in candyland. Well, there was that one drunk grouch who refused to allow anyone to step over her ice chest to reach the street (necessary at some point because ladders, chairs, tents, ice chests (lots of ice chests) are placed immediately beside each other, with nary a two-inch space to get off the sidewalk or off the street, as the case may be. It's really pretty selfish and inconsiderate, but all up and down St. Charles, particularly, I saw this.
Parades, babies, nuns, red beans, beer, beads, masks, beautiful neighborhoods...what a week! You've all read and written all about it, so enough of that. It was great, and never have I seen so clear a personification of the collective attitude: "Thanks, I needed that!"
Oscar night: Rachael reigns as queen of oscar omniscience at least until next year, correctly guessing (?) more categories than her siblings, inlaws and mom. It was fun fielding inquiries from you guys all night about "who's ahead?" An appropriate award befitting a prima donna will arrive on 5th street eventually.
So I mentioned the 'dead' alligator? If you haven't heard about that, just ask, but now that the reason d'etre is in full swing, I'll just move on to the filming of Deja Vu here on the Point and elsewhere. The Algiers/Canal ferry has been commandeered for various needs of the filming, including blowing it up. (I think I read they are building a mock-up for that, but around here, you never know....) We are being 'ferried' across the river to the Canal street side on rented buses, running each 1/2 hour and I think I saw at least two leave the Point this morning with one person, and the driver, aboard. I can't help thinking of all the extra pollution on the streets from all that diesel. Ugggghhhh. AND they are noisy, AND I don't have the toot of the departing ferry to keep me abreast of time passing all day.
On the good side (I think) the levee and surrounding area will be crawling with movie types for awhile. Today I went to Mardi Gras World to take a check to the chef there, who cooked for our weekend clean-up, and does daily lunches. She told me the crew uses the barn for a catering spot, early a.m., and other times when they are filming or working around here. While there, I offered (begged) to work for free doing prep, etc., so I could learn more about catering and large-scale cooking. (This won't involved any movie people, as they have their own caterers who come in trucks whenever they eat there.) She will call me about an upcoming wedding rehearsal job they have next week, and maybe I can help out for a few days on that job. She's just the nicest lady, and everything she cooks is good. I'm looking forward to that.
Well, got to get on the bike and ride the levee...I see loads of trailer-mounted lights parked all along there...maybe tonight there will be some night scenes. I'll let you know!!

How exciting! We get a lot of film people here, but the industry is so well-rooted in the Austin area that they don't usually just pop up in unexpected places. But I am sure if you hang out at Jo's Coffee or the South Congress Cafe, you'll see a scruffy celeb or two! Keep me updated!
Just remember....Jane + Denzel = *swoon*
